The Backstory

The original layout of the track was opened in 1956. Then, in 1985, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit was purchased, remodelled, and then became one of the top racing venues in the world. Today, visitors can watch the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Superbike World Championship, and the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship there, along with plenty of other key events in the racing calendar.

The race circuit itself was conceptualised and developed by volunteers who were keen racing enthusiasts. Compared to the current influx of recent circuit developments which have been pursued by professional organisations, this was considered an authentic approach with a love of racing at its very core.

Over the years, the popularity of the race circuit has grown, seeing visitors from all over the world fly in especially to watch events and to tour the track. Because of this, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit Visitor Centre was opened in 1998, giving guests the chance to learn more about the history of the venue and the events that take place there.

Now, alongside Phillip Island’s other key attractions, like the Penguin Parade and Seal Rocks, the Grand Prix track is a must-visit on any trip to the island. Once you’ve had your dose of nature and admired the beautiful scenery that characterises Phillip Island, you can check out the racing venue, watch some high-speed events, and get to know more about an important sport that defines much of Australia’s history.
