The best way to explore French Island is by walking or hiring a bike. Cars are limited on the island and can also be expensive. You can also join a tour, where you can relax and follow a guide who will take you around the island.

French Island is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including over 230 bird species! There are even rare birds living on the island, such as the king quail, orange-bellied parrot, and white-bellied sea eagle. You can also expect to find other animals, including rat kangaroos, echidnas, and the largest population of koalas in Victoria.

French Island is full of walking tracks that can accommodate a full day, half a day, or even shorter excursions. Popular longer walks include the West Coast Wetlands Walking Track, which takes over 3 hours for a return trip. Or the Fairhaven Northern Beach Walk, a 2-hour return walk.
