Visiting Seal Rocks? Here’s what you need to know…
Seal Rocks is a small rock island just next to the Nobbies. It’s home to a large colony of fur seals that live here all year long.
That means you’ll be able to see these cute creatures any time of year!
You can see the Australian fur seals at the Nobbies. Simply park up at the Nobbies Centre car park and take a walk along the boardwalk that looks out over the Nobbies. If you look closely out to sea, you’ll see the seals enjoying the rocks and chilling in their natural habitat.
If it’s a rainy day, make sure you take shoes with a decent grip as the boardwalk can get slippery!
If you spot them lying around on the rocks, then they’re likely resting after catching their food! Seals might look slow on land, but in the sea, they are highly agile creatures. Octopus, squid and small fish often fall prey to the fur seals, who hunt them with ease.
Fur seals love shallow waters!
You might even see seals at the penguin parade! Seals like to catch their food in shallow waters near the safety of rocks, so they’re never too far away from the shoreline. This means you’re almost guaranteed to see a seal on Phillip Island.
If you want to find out more information about the seal conservation efforts, visit the Nobbies Visitor Centre. They’ve got some interesting exhibitions and displays that showcase their work surrounding seal welfare conservation.
Seal welfare
The Australian fur seal is not endangered, but it certainly faced a decrease in population during the late 1800s.
The 1800s were devastating for the Australian fur seal population when settlers harvested them. But luckily, the population has bounced back since, and now they are thriving in healthy population sizes.
